Autism Research Centre

Early Autism detection with ASDetect.

Overview

The Olga Tennison Autism Research Centre (OTARC) is Australia’s first centre dedicated to research on Autism Spectrum Disorders, and they had an idea for an app that would allow parents to detect ASD symptoms at the earliest opportunity. The challenge was to collate over a decade of research and information around ASD and convert it to an easily accessible format. ASDetect was born, enabling parents and caregivers to assess the social attention and communication behaviors of their children younger than 2½ years. ASDetect is based on over a decade of research with a 81% accuracy rate at identifying the likelihood of autism.

ASDetect guides parents through each assessment using a combination of informative videos and questions, and is followed by a comprehensive on-screen report, with results ranging from a low to high likelihood of autism.

Launch of the Australian research initiative attracted global attention and investment along with over 12,000 downloads of the app across 26 countries in the first months. ASDetect has won a number of awards for Research and Development in Australia. Ongoing research and collection of data is refining and updating the app with plans to translate into a number of languages increasing its reach to over 80 million children..
